ultrasonic testing - principle

what is ultrasonic testing?
ultrasonic testing is my speciality. it’s my job, my career. ultrasonic testing is a method where we use sound energy to inspect or check the flaw inside of the material. ultrasonic testing also is use to make measurement, to check the character of the material or the configuration of the material being inspect.
how’s ut work?
there are several functional units in ut. it consists of a pulser, probe or transducer and a crt screen. probe is an electronic device that can produce a high voltage electrical pulses. it converts mechanical energy (vibrations) to an electrical energy, thus produce a high frequency sound. the sound energy then propagates through the materials in the form of waves. if there is something inside the material, such as crack blocking the path of the sound, part of it will reflected back to the surface. the reflected wave then transformed into an electrical energy by the probes and is displayed in the crt screen.
how to measure?
in ut, measurement is a critical part. 5 years working in this field, i found that calibration is the heart of the ut inspection. it will reflect on how precise your measurement. even 1 milimeter deviation will make your measurement run from the actual location s of the flaw.
